BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Black History Month is celebrated each February as a way to recognize the central role African Americans have played in U.S. History and to recognize and celebrate their achievements.  This month has also been designated as a time to call attention to Black Mental Health Awareness.

As we know, mental health does not discriminate, however our concerns or experiences in how we understand and cope with these conditions may be different based on our race, color, gender or identity.  African Americans and other minority communities often experience more severe forms of mental health conditions due to socioeconomic disparities and other barriers.

We ask our community members, please do your part to be informed of cultural implications and differences to improve your cultural awareness- You can start by checking out these informational pages from NAMI for Black History Month.
